How to learn a K-pop dance from YouTube

Official dance practice videos are the best way to learn K-pop choreography, but they're fast and usually filmed facing you. Mirroring, slowing down and looping one section at a time turns them into a step-by-step lesson.

Step by step

  1. Pick a dance practice video

Search YouTube for the song name plus "dance practice". These videos show the whole choreography and formation clearly, without camera cuts. Copy the link and paste it into SongMark.

  2. Mirror it

Tap the mirror button under the video so the dancers move the same way you do, as if you were facing a studio mirror.

  3. Learn one section at a time at 0.5×

Set the loop handles around the first verse or eight counts, switch on Loop section and step the speed down to 0.5×. Repeat until you can do it without watching.

  4. Build back up to full speed

Raise the speed to 0.75× and then 1× on the same loop, then move the loop to the next section. Finish by running the whole dance at full speed.

  5. Film a take and compare

Turn on the camera next to the video, record yourself dancing along, and watch the take back to spot where your timing or angles differ.

Tips from K-pop cover dancers

  • Learn the counts before the style. Get the steps and timing first at slow speed, then add the attitude, facial expressions and details at full speed.
  • Use fancams for details. Once you know the choreography, a member’s fancam shows small details like hand positions and head angles that the group practice video hides.
  • Practise transitions, not just sections. When you move the loop, overlap it with the end of the previous section so the join between them gets practised too.

Questions

Should I use dance practice videos or tutorials?

Start with a dance practice video to see the full choreography. If a move is hard to read, look for a cover artist's tutorial that breaks it down, then come back to the practice video to put it together.

The video I want isn't mirrored. Do I need a different upload?

No. SongMark mirrors any YouTube video, so you can use the official dance practice instead of hunting for a mirrored re-upload.

How slow should I go?

Most dancers learn new choreography at 0.5× or 0.75×. SongMark goes down to 0.25× for very fast footwork, and the music keeps its normal pitch at every speed.

Does this work for TikTok dances?

SongMark plays YouTube videos. Many TikTok dances have tutorials or dance practice versions on YouTube, including YouTube Shorts, which SongMark opens in a vertical frame.
